Nestled between the highest mountains of Austria, on the climatically particularly pleasant south side of the main Alpine ridge, Virgen lies 1200 m above sea level. A beautiful mountain village at the foot of the Großvenediger in a sunny, weather-protected position, it is therefore also called the "Merano of East Tyrol". Virgen's convenient location also offers many possibilities for day trips, e. g. to Carinthia, Salzburg/Großglocknerstraße, Italy/Venice, South Tyrol . . .

Dizzying heights, crystal-clear mountain lakes, torrents of torrents, a landscape in bloom. The Hohe Tauern National Park extends over 1,800 km² and offers an unforgettable holiday experience for the whole family with its 10,000 animal and 1,500 plant species. Snowy forests, a sun-drenched valley. Peace and quiet in harmony with nature push hectic and hustle and bustle far away. Exactly the right thing to find yourself again.

Countless marked walking and hiking trails lead through forests, flowering meadows and romantic gorges, invite you to explore over 20 managed huts and alpine pastures on the north and south side of the valley with relaxing walks or hikes. Demanding mountaineers climb to dizzying heights to the more than 60 three-thousand-metre peaks in the surrounding area. For "water rats" Virgen has a swimming pool with a 45 m slide and diving tower. Artificial turf tennis courts, beach volleyball and rollerblade court round off the sporting facilities. A rafting tour on roaring torrents, provide for thrills of a special kind. Mountain bikers cycle comfortably on lonely forest and field paths.

Skiing & cross country skiing - fun on the slopes

Virgen offers besides a small practice lift for beginners, directly in the village, also approx. 25 km of cross-country skiing pleasure. Only 7 km away from us, (10 minutes by car) lies in Matrei for demanding skiers, with over 110 km of slopes the Grossglockner Resort is the largest ski area in East Tyrol. Fun on the slopes at the highest level awaits you. On 2,200 hectares of ski space, no wishes are left unfulfilled. 90 % of the area is covered with snow and three snow-covered valley runs ensure snow until spring. Spacious beginner's areas in both Kals and Matrei promise fantastic conditions for experts and beginners alike.
